The homeowner of this property contacted JHDG to create an outdoor living space that would support their young family with three teen daughters.

When we arrived the backyard was a huge spread of asphalt, which the family never used, and had a double car garage that was brimming with storage and very disorganized.

Our team began by creating a step down from the home’s back door to a an elevated cedar deck and room for cooking zone. A stone dining terrace at grade was surrounded by formal boxwood hedging and hydrangea trees.

A large section of lawn was bordered with flagstone to add a touch of formality was added to create green space for the children to play soccer and other sports, with a flagstone path leading through the backyard to a covered sitting area. This sitting area was fashioned from the original garage, removing two of the walls and creating a three-season room with a covered porch and flagstone sitting area – perfect for sitting when it rains, or for a cozy space to spend time after dinner. Behind the sitting area is an L-shaped storage area that was reorganized to ensure that the storage is usable and functional in the long term.

We finished the property by adding columnar beech trees on one side, creating a green walled-garden effect and maximizing privacy.

This Lytton Park landscape design accommodated the needs of the family by providing multifunctional spaces, maximizing their use in multiple seasons and has been featured in multiple publications.
