This beautiful and contemporary uptown oasis landscape design is a Landscape Ontario Provincial Award of Excellence Winner.

The homeowner of this Toronto property contacted JHDG to create a backyard design more suited to their family of five, with three growing boys.

To begin, we regraded the property, significantly changing the grading and drainage of the landscape and removing pooling water in the backyard.

Then, our design team created an energy and flow of circulation through the backyard space with an Ipe walkway* from the elevated back door to a series of functional living spaces. A series of decks were created to accommodate for changes in elevation leading to a sunken stone terrace with seating for family dining and entertaining. An additional pea gravel and stone seating area was added around a corten steel fireball, as well as a breakfast nook in front of the garage, ultimately creating four unique and functional outdoor living areas for the family.

The backyard had an existing garage, which we determined would make an excellent space for a ‘tween retreat’. The standard garage door was changed to a roll door with frosted glass panels, offering lots of light, and creating a three-season room. The garage now acts not only as a hub for the homeowner’s sons to spend time with their friends, but also as a convenient place for catering during parties, or an enclosed 3-season sitting area during colder months.
